LIFE IS A DRAG - By Dave Mance
Let me tell you…this
was one LONG racing season! We only had one Saturday rain out and
a Fourth of July race canceled due to rain. Needless to say, the
local racers definitely had plenty of Saturday nights to get out
of the house and take a break from their everyday routine.
Saturday the 15th was looking iffy for rain, but we managed to dry
the track, even being as cold as it was outside, and had an 85 car
turn out for our final night of racing at Spencer Speedway. Being
that it was cool out, the starting line was full of traction and
racers were “breaking out” because the air was good and cars
were performing at their peak. So, here are the results from our
final night of drag racing:
Super Pro - 1st
place – Marc Caruso, Fairport
2nd place –
Craig Giordano, Webster
3rd place –
Westley Cayea, Williamson
4th place – Mike
Adam, Webster
Modified - 1st
place – Don Galiotti, Rochester
2nd place –
Chuckie White, Ontario
3rd place – Matt
Himes, Ontario
4th place – Rich
Liberi, Marion
Street - 1st place
– Chris Fontana, Rochester
2nd place – TJ
Parks, Ontario
3rd place – Rich
Garland, West Walworth
4th place – John
Wilson, West Walworth
Gamblers - 1st
place – Ken Iamele, Rochester
2nd place –
Steve Marshall Jr., Rochester
Councilwoman
Hawkins-Mance and her brother, “Fast Ed Hawkins” even came out
on the final night to race. Hawkins-Mance drove my 2005 GMC
Pick-up and she completed three rounds of eliminations before red
lighting and just missing out on the money rounds, but she
definitely had a fun time. (Good thing it was the last race, or
she would be racing every Saturday)! Fast Ed Hawkins went out in
the first round with an oil leak and a slick that kept losing air,
but it was great to see an old Track Champion come out to play. I
hope to see him more next year (hint, hint Ed)!
It was close
between Super Pro and Modified for final points of the year. Paul
Kelsch was just two points ahead of Mark Talmadge and when the
night was over, Paul ended up taking top spot by just one point!
Good job Paul! In Modified, Sam Capizzi Sr. and Matt Himes ended
up with the SAME amount of points so we had to have a “run-off”
at the end of the night to see who would be the top dog. Matt
fouled which gave Sam the win and number one position in Modified.
Sam Capizzi Jr. had the Street class locked up last week. He had
accumulated enough points so that no one would have been able to
catch him in the final week.
The “Bad luck”
driver award goes to Gary French whose axle broke which put him
out early in the evening. The “Good luck” award goes to Gary
French for having good friends in Scott Beasaw Sr. and the Beasaw
family, who provided another axle that they installed right at the
track so he could go on to race Sunday at another local track and
win the trophy class. I’m really glad they got it fixed because
Gary will be competing at the bracket finals in Reading, PA
September 26th through the 29th and we need him.
I will have
another article in a couple weeks to let the fans know how well
the team did at the bracket finals. In the meantime, turn up the
heat because before you know it everybody will be snowmobiling!
Have a good week and I will be writing again soon.
