LIFE IS A DRAG - By Dave Mance
Now that we’re really winding
down, I can give you an insight into the REAL world of drag racing
at Spencer Speedway. I read an article in the National Dragster
the other day and it stated “You don’t have to be in shape to
drag race. Some of the sports portlier pilots are among the best
driver’s out there, but getting and staying fit has always been
a part of racing life for some Pro driver’s.” For instance,
Kenny Bernstein speed walks and Larry Dixon works out in a gym.
Now, at Spencer Speedway Mark Talmadge rides a bike that is about
20 years old (rather than walking up to the line), Matt Himes
wheels around in a wheelchair (broken foot) when he’s not
driving his car, Paul Kelsch prefers the golf cart method to keep
his accelerator foot in shape, and Nick Tantalo rides a power
scooter! Needless to say, we’re gunning for the “portlier”
type pilots in the long run. (Ha, Ha!!)
We had a really good turnout on
the 8th of September with about 98 cars showing up to race. We
also had a lot of break downs that made the night go right to
curfew time. Now that I’ve finished that bowl of ice cream (let’s
talk about portly), here are the results of the September 8th
race:

Mohr, Walworth

Rochester

There were a lot of “Bad Luck”
driver awards that needed to be awarded this week, so here it
goes; Butch Beasaw blew his motor in the first time trial, Scott
Beasaw (who’s going to the bracket finals) broke the rear end of
his car, the guy who has the 2-seater white Pontiac sports car
broke an axle again (2nd week in a row), and Nina McDonald’s car
stalled and couldn’t be restarted during eliminations. The “Good
Luck” driver award goes to Paul Kelsch for keeping his #1 point
standing after Mark Talmadge was eliminated in the first round.
Really guys, I’m just joking
around about how lazy we all are. It has been a great season and
everyone has worked hard and been good sportsmen and it has been
my pleasure to work with you all. Thanks for all your help in my
time of need this season and good luck to all those going on to
the bracket finals.
