Spencer Speedway Readies For 2018 Season

In 1991, Spencer Speedway
started what then was a secondary division known as Grand
American Modifieds. Today that division is the premier class at
the flat half mile oval and has since run 385 feature events.
During that time Buck Catalano has racked up 54 feature wins,
almost 15 percent of all races run to date.
The top ten feature winners in the Sunoco Modifieds also include:
Catalano at 54, Bill Hebing (45) Jon Burroughs (27), Kevin
Timmerman (23), Mike Leaty (22), Rick Zacharias (17), Daryl
Lewis Jr. (14), Roger Steurrys (12), Rusty Smith (12), Tommy
Catalano and Zach Shove at 11 wins each.
Other divisions running at Spencer on a regular basis are the Super
Sixes, which started in 2006 and the “Grandpa Dog” Four
Cylinders, which started in 2009. The Super Sixes have run 147
features, while to Four Cylinder class has 105 features run.
Brian Hallett leads the Super Six class in feature wins with 25. Kris
Hilegeer sits second with 22 feature wins to his credit. Tim
Faro (18), Keith Butler Jr. (13) and Billy Semmler, tied with
Skip Powers with 11 wins each.
In the Grandpa Dog Four Cylinders, Shaun Frarey leads the way with 12
wins. Timmy Catalano (11 wins) sits in second. Kevin Bertolone,
Mike Bradshaw and Mike Hyman have 10 wins each to round out the
top five all time winners list.
The Full Fender class began at Spencer back in 1955. It has had many
names throughout the years; Hobby, Late Model, Super Stock and
Street Stock to name just a few. Today we call the division the
Over the years 880 full fender races have been run. Ironically the top
two Sunoco Modified feature winners are also listed one and two
in the full fender win list; Buck Catalano (39) and Bill Hebing
(31). Rounding out the top five all time full fender list are
Brian Horn (28), Jim Steffenhagen Jr. (27) and Amy Catalano
This all leads us up to 2018, the 68th year Spencer Speedway has been in
operation. Racing this year will start with the annual “Test &
Tune” session, one week later than last year, on Friday, May
25th. Gates are scheduled to open at 3 pm.
Different this year is the fact that oval track racing has been scheduled
for every other week starting Friday, June 1st. Racing starts
each night at 7:15 pm, except for the final two nights. Each
week racing runs the Sunoco Modifieds, Super Sixes, Four
Cylinders and NYS Superstocks will be in action except for the
final week. The last race of the year will be the annual RoC
night event on Friday, August 31. RoC modifieds, RoC Street
Stocks and RoC Four Cylinder cars will be highlighted that
A number of special appearances also highlight the 2018 season. On June
29th, the Lighthouse Lanes Small Block Supermodified Series has
been added to the schedule. On July 13th the Sunoco Modified
will run Twin 20s and the Kids will have their annual bicycle
races. The NYS Superstocks will have their chance at Twin 20s on
July 27th. The annual 50-lap Dave London memorial for the NYS
Super Stocks takes to the track on August 24th.
