Spencer Speedway Posts Tentative 2017 Schedule by Gary Spaid

Race fans will see a number of changes taking place at NASCAR’s Upstate New York racing home, Spencer Speedway. The biggest change is the starting times. Unlike in the past when 7:30 was used, the new weekly starting time (unless specified) will be 7:15 p.m.

Pit gates will open at 4 pm, followed by the general admission gates at 5:30 pm. Race practice will start at 6 p.m. weekly.

“Grandpa Dog” is the new weekly sponsor for the Four Cylinder division. Michael Heimes, better known to the local racing community as “grandpa”, had been a fixture at Spencer Speedway for years. He raced there in the 60’s and work on the tow trucks following his racing career. His son Dave, who also raced at Spencer, wanted to keep his dad’s name as part of the speedway’s history and legacy. Last year the “J-Dog” four cylinder race team started running with grandson Jacob behind the wheel. Following a “Test & Tune” accident, Dave took over the driving chores for Jacob, who felt better about wrenching the car. With the support of a number of other race teams Dave was able to sponsor the four cylinder class in his father’s memory.

Starting in 2009, the Grandpa Dog Four Cylinder class has added excitement weekly to the program. Last year’s champion, Mike Hyman is just two wins away from tying the all-time feature win leader in that division, Shaun Frarey.

The weekly NASCAR “Sunoco Modifieds” will be in action 13 times during the 2017 season. This limited modified class has been racing at Spencer since 1991. The defending champion is Kevin Timmerman. Adding to the open wheel modifieds are two 75-lap Race of Champions (RoC) qualifiers. Spencer will be hosting qualifiers on June 2nd and July 21st. This year the RoC Championship Race returns to its Pennsylvania roots. This year’s RoC’s big race will run at Lake Erie Speedway, on September 30th.

In the Super Six division, 12 races await those drivers, plus one “Open” race. Barrett Schenk is the defending champion. This division joined the weekly racing program at Spencer in 2006. Brian Hallett is currently the all-time feature winner with 25 feature victories to his credit.

The kids will also have their chance at racing at Spencer. Two bicycle races have been scheduled for the long front straight on the half mile oval; July 17th and August 18th.

Two “Meet and Greets” are also on tap; May 26th and August 4th. “Our fans love the ‘Meet and Greets’ we host on the front stretch,” stated promoter John White. “They get a chance to see their favorite drivers to get an autograph, plus they see the race cars up close.”

The New York Super Stocks will be returning to Spencer six times in 2017. Their first appearance takes place on June 2nd, as a support division to the RoC Modifieds. They also are scheduled to appear on June 16th, July 14th and 28th, August 11th and 25th. This final appearance will be the annual 50-lap Dave London Memorial.

One surprise addition to the schedule is the first ever appearance the GRIT Sportsman dirt cars in support of the Dave London Memorial on August 25th. Currently GRIT is hosting two asphalt events, one a Chemung and the other at Spencer. This event would be the first official dirt sportsman race at Spencer Speedway. The dirt sportsman have appeared a number of times in the past at our sister track, the Chemung Speedrome.

Current plans call for having printed schedules available at this year’s Motorsports Expo in Syracuse, available through one of the weekly race teams. With Chemung switching to Saturdays, a number of drivers from there are expected to venture on Fridays to Spencer Speedway.

The first event scheduled for 2017 is the annual “Test & Tune” on May 12th. The NASCAR point season opens on the following Friday, May 19th at 7:15 p.m.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASC AR Place to Race” for Central New York in 2017. Points earned each week at Spencer are counted as part of the national NASC AR Whelen All-American Point Chase.
