Amy Catalano Wins First Feature Of 2016 At Spencer
by Gary Spaid
Amy Catalano, from Ontario,
NY, add one more NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature to her Spencer
Speedway growing resume. Her win brings her total now to eight
career feature wins at Spencer dating back to July 2009. Amy
held off her son Tommy for the win.
“It’s been a while since we’ve been in victory lane,” stated Amy. “ I was
beginning to question all of these guys beating me weekly. I
have to thank my husband Dave for all of the work he puts into
all of the family cars.”
As for the other classes, Mike Hyman, from Alton, NY, kept his win streak
alive in the Auto Value 4-Cylinder Scorpions. In three outings
so far in 2016 he has won them all. Only Maddy Virts made the
4-Cylinder victory, in a special non-points race on the RoC
With his little girl in his arms he stated,” This is one of the first
times my whole family has been able to make it to the track.”
When asked if he thought of them as his “lucky penny”, he
responded. I guess I do now.”
In the Super Six division the feature win went to Barrett Schenk from
Palmyra, NY. He is the first driver to double up feature wins in
this class, winning on opening night.
“We went back to our original tire combination we used on opening night
and it worked,” Schenk commented. He added, “I sure am glad we
put on a better show then last week,” referring to the accident
filled event run a week ago.
The 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature saw Amy take off from her
outside pole starting position and lead the entire distance as
the race was run green-to-checkers without a yellow.
Her son, Tommy jumped out and chased her down as the two drew away from
the rest of the field. By lap 10 the front two cars held a 20
car lead over the third place car, Mike Leaty. Leaty had just
made his move by Daryl Lewis Jr. for the show position. Leaty
then began to close in on the two leaders but without the help
of a yellow he had to settle for third.
At the finish line it was Amy followed by Tommy. Leaty, Kevin Timmerman
and Daryl Lewis Jr. rounded out the top five finishers.
“I have to thank the fans for coming out,” added Amy. “Without them we
could not come out here and play with our toys. We all want to
build this class back up again.”
The 20-lap Super Six feature saw the front row of Chris Connors and Adam
VanHall of out front fighting for the lead. Connors was recorded
as the leader of the first lap, but then the honors fell to
On lap nine, Barrett Schenk made his move to grab the lead from VanHall.
He brought along Ashley Schoonmaker, moving into second. Schenk
was beginning to start to pull away when the yellow flew on lap
16 for a spinout by Carrie Schoonmaker in the first turn.
The restart saw Barrett again easily maintain his lead with Schley in
second. At the checkers Barrett took the win, followed by Ashley
Schoonmaker, Faro, VanHall and Brian Hallett.
The Auto Value 4-Cylinder Scorpions, Jacob Gustafson opened up an
impressive lead over the rest of the field at the drop of the
green. Gustafson took advantage of a fast outside grove to make
his move to the front.
The yellow flew on lap eight for a double spin by Maddy Virts and Paul
Flye both battling for third. The restart saw Mike Hyman use the
outside line down the backstretch to take the lead from
Gustafson. Hyman stretched his lead to some 20 car lengths over
Tom Alloco in second.
Hyman remained the leader at the checkers followed by Alloco, Virts,
Carrie Bolton and Flye.
